Ta'ameya (Egyptian Falafel) is an all time favourite street food in Egypt . In most part of the middle East , Falafel is made with ground chickpeas. In Egypt however, we make it with dried Fava beans.  These are best served with pita bread, tomato, onion and tahini sauce .

Preparation Time : 20 minutes .

Cooking Time : 15 minutes .

What are the ingredients required to make Egyptian Falafel ? 

Egyptian Falafel


To make Egyptian Falafel it requires a minimum amount of such ingredients 

1.  1 quart vegetable oil for frying or as needed .

2. 1 cup sesame seeds.

3. 1 teaspoon ground cumin .

4. 1½ teaspoon salt .

5. 1½ teaspoon coriander .

6. 3 cloves garlic .

7. ½ cup fresh parsley .

8. 1 red onion, quartered .

9. 2 cups dried split Fava beans .

How to make Egyptian Falafel ? 

Egyptian Falafel


To make Egyptian Falafel you have to follow some steps one by one .

Step 1 : 

Place Fava beans into large bowl and cover with several inches of water . Let soak , 8 hours to overnight. Drain .

Step 2 : 

Combine soaked Fava beans, red onion, parsley, cilantro, dill , garlic, coriander, salt and cumin in a food processor , process to a dough like consistency .

Step 3 : 

Heat a skillet over medium heat . Add sesame seeds, cook , stirring occasionally, until toasted , about 5 minutes . Transfer to a large plate .

Step 4 : 

Shape Fava beans mixture into about 50 balls . Roll balls in sesame seeds to coat .

Step 5 : 

Fill a large saucepan ¼ full with oil , heat over medium heat . Fry Fava bean balls in batches until golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes per batch . Drain on paper towels .

Additional tips : 

You can substitute ½ of the Fava beans with chickpeas if you are used to traditional Falafel .
